Grapefruit

Family: Rutaceae
Genus: Citrus
Species: C. x paradisi

Grapefruit is thought to have originated in the Caribbean around the late 17th to 18th century as a natural hybrid of the Jamaican sweet orange (C. sinensis) and the pomelo (C. maxima).

Modern varieties of grapefruit range from yellow to pinkish red, and their flavour can range from highly acidic to tart but somewhat sweeter. Grapefruit is grown commercially for sale as fruit or processed into juice.

Grapefruit essential oil is a useful by-product of the juice industry. The oil is usually produced by cold-pressing or cold expression of the rind. The demand for citrus essential oils is increasing, as modern consumers demand more natural ingredients in food, beverages and health products over artificial flavouring.

Grapefruit essential oil has well-known antioxidant and antibacterial properties and is widely used in ointments, creams, aromatherapy and the fragrance industry.
