Clove

Family: Myrtaceae
Genus: Syzygium
Species: S. aromaticum

The clove tree is an evergreen native to The Maluku Islands of Indonesia. It is a member of the Myrtle family (Myrtaceae), along with other woody species like Guava and Eucalyptus.

The aromatic flower buds of the clove tree are collected and sold on as cloves. Usually grown on small family-run farms, the flower buds are traditionally picked by hand and dried in the sun, before being packed and exported.

Cloves are known for their use in fragrance, medicine and as a culinary spice. The oil is obtained from the leaves, stems and buds of the clove tree by water or steam distillation.

Clove oils have been used for hundreds of years in ancient medicine and aromatherapy. Studies have found clove oil to have several medicinal properties, including being antimicrobial and aiding pain relieving, digestive issues and mood improvement.
