The Power of Beeswax

Beeswax is one of the most wonderful yet underrated natural resources on the planet – which is why CRANBOURN® uses it in our luxury candles.

One of the things that make CRANBOURN® candles so special is our wax.

Wax and fragrance are arguably the two most important parts of a scented candle. The wax is responsible for releasing the fragrance into your space, the type of flickering flame produced, and how long your candle lasts.

Here at CRANBOURN®, we have chosen to use a blend of sustainable vegetable wax and beeswax in our luxury candles. We believe that beeswax is one of the most wonderful yet underrated natural resources on the planet – and we feel passionate about the power of this incredible wax. When it comes to quality, health, fragrance and sustainability, beeswax is head and shoulders above other types of candle wax.

The only downside to a high-quality product like beeswax is that it is considerably more expensive to produce than other waxes, and this is why many well-known brands opt for cheaper paraffin wax in their products. Always read the label content on the packaging carefully to ensure you know which wax you are purchasing. All CRANBOURN® products containing sustainably harvested beeswax are easily recognisable by our ‘Bees & Botanicals™’ trademark featured on our packaging.

Breathe easier with beeswax

Most high street shop-bought candles are predominantly made with cheaper paraffin wax, which is made from petroleum oil. When they burn, they release a quantity of volatile organic compounds toxic (chemicals) and known carcinogens into the air – similar to breathing in diesel fumes in your own home.

It comes as no surprise that these toxins in the air can aggravate conditions like asthma and allergies. Over time, regularly breathing in these fumes is bad for overall lung health.

Most other types of candle wax require a lengthy chemical process to create the final candle from the original raw material. Beeswax in its natural state is already in wax form, so it does not need the addition of any synthetic ingredients or chemicals.

One of the most unique and magical characteristics of beeswax is its ability to purify the air. Beeswax candles emit negative ions as they burn. The negative ions help neutralise pollutants in the air, helping to eliminate dust, mould spores, pollen, and any nasty odours floating around.

Beeswax candles naturally purify the air and improve air quality, which is just one of the many reasons we chose to incorporate this incredible wax into our CRANBOURN® candles. Lighting a beeswax candle in your room before bedtime can also help to aid restful sleep and improve your breathing throughout the night.

Invest in quality

Candles containing beeswax are usually more expensive than candles made from other waxes – but the results truly speak for themselves.

With the highest melting point of all candle waxes, beeswax candles have a significantly longer burn time. Not only this but the light they emit is said to be the most visually beautiful – their flame gives out a pure, warm light to counteract a day looking at the blue light from screens. This gentle glow is perfect for tackling eye strain or headaches, helping you create a relaxing ambience to unwind after a long day.

Beeswax candles have so much more to offer than just their visual qualities. They are distinctly unique and rare, encapsulating the power of nature in candle form. It takes approximately 33 million visits to flowers for bees to create just one pound of beeswax. The creation process of beeswax candles is, therefore, more meaningful, mindful and special. At CRANBOURN®, we are passionate about protecting and promoting the importance of bees and pollinators. Bees are critically important to ensuring the health of our environment.

Do not be fooled

Although their price point is a little higher than standard candles, candles made with beeswax are worth the extra expense. With their high melting point and long burn time, a quality candle containing beeswax is a worthwhile investment.

Candles are little everyday luxuries that help you create your rituals within your home. Opt for high-quality luxury products to help you create your unique atmospheres, rather than selecting throwaway short-lived products that do not have any intrinsic benefits.

When choosing beeswax candles for your home, there are a few things to watch out for. Some luxury brands are not 100% honest in their marketing and will charge the higher beeswax price point when in reality, their products contain only a tiny percentage of beeswax blended with paraffin. Ensure brands are backing up their claims with true quality by checking beeswax percentage, the type of wick, the materials used in their packaging and their behind-the-scenes processes.

We are big believers in transparency, and making choices for the greater good of our planet. Find out more about our sustainable ethos and our B Corp journey here.
