Alongside joining the B Corp movement, we also support the work of The Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC). You may have seen this certification on products or websites, so we wanted to explain a little more about what it represents.

The FSC is an international non-profit organisation founded in 1993 that promotes the responsible management of the world’s forests. With deforestation continuing to affect ecosystems and communities around the globe, the FSC’s role in supporting sustainable forestry practices has never been more important.

The FSC aims to protect and care for not only our forests but also the incredibly diverse wildlife and people who call them home. To do this, they run a global forest certification system.

Caring for our forests

Forests are vital ecosystems that sustain life on our planet. They provide habitat for an extraordinary diversity of species while supporting communities that depend on them for their livelihoods. Organisations such as the FSC work to ensure that forestry and timber production are managed responsibly, helping to prevent irreversible damage to these essential natural environments.

One of the clearest indicators of the FSC’s impact is the support it receives from leading environmental organisations. Major charities including WWF and The Woodland Trust endorse the FSC’s approach, recognising the important work it undertakes to promote responsible forest management. When you see the FSC label, it indicates that the wood used has been sourced from forests where trees are carefully managed, replaced, or allowed to regenerate naturally.

FSC standards also extend beyond environmental protection. Forest owners and managers must support local communities by employing local workers and providing appropriate training, equipment, safety standards, and fair wages. In many cases, they are also encouraged to invest in community development, including education initiatives. Certain areas of forest are completely protected from logging to safeguard indigenous sacred sites and preserve rare or endangered flora and fauna.

The FSC certification

FSC certification operates through two complementary standards: forest management and chain of custody.

The first applies to forest owners and managers. This voluntary certification requires an independent audit assessing how the forest is managed, including environmental protection, biodiversity, and community welfare. When a forest meets FSC’s rigorous standards, the timber produced from it may carry the FSC certification mark.

The second element, known as chain-of-custody certification, applies throughout the supply chain. It tracks certified materials from the forest through processing, manufacturing, and distribution to the final product. This system ensures transparency and accountability at every stage, so when you purchase an FSC-certified product, you can trust that the materials have been responsibly sourced and carefully monitored throughout their journey.

The FSC system encourages sustainable shopping

When shopping for wood, paper products, or printed packaging, it is worth looking out for the FSC logo. The symbol indicates that the materials used originate from responsibly managed forests that meet internationally recognised environmental and social standards.

Choosing FSC-certified products helps support responsible forestry and encourages businesses to source materials with greater care and transparency. By favouring certified products, consumers play an important role in protecting forest ecosystems and the communities that depend on them.
