Citrus

Family: Rutaceae
Genus: Citrus
Species: Numerous

The citrus family is considered to have originated in southeast Asia, and centuries of hybridization have produced the wide range of citrus fruits that we enjoy today. Worldwide, oranges account for the bulk of citrus production.

Although citrus fruits are primarily grown for sale as fresh fruits or juices, the rind of citrus fruits are rich in essential oils. Some of the most common oils are lemon, sweet orange and bergamot essential oils, collected by pricking the surface of the rind followed by cold pressing to release the oils. As well as the rind, the blossom, buds and leaves of citrus can also be used to produce essential oils.

Citrus oils have been used for hundreds of years in ancient medicine and aromatherapy. The fruits gain their fragrance from high concentrations of limonoids and flavonoids, which are known to have strong antioxidant and antibacterial properties. Studies have found citrus oil also can aid mood improvement.
