Stress and anxiety can stem from all different causes, but they are both common emotions to experience in our daily lives to varying extents. If you often suffer from anxiety, botanicals can help you find an inner state of calm.

Whether you are feeling stressed, nervous or anxious, there are plenty of natural oils and plants that can help you overcome the physical symptoms.

The best botanicals to use for anxiety

Lavender

Starting with one of the most well-known sleep aides, lavender (Lavandula) is also a huge help when it comes to anxiety or stress. A study demonstrated that lavender has tangible effects on symptoms of anxiety and depression. Breathing in the scent or ingesting lavender can help reduce blood pressure and heart rate, and help you to regulate your emotions.

Bergamot

Bergamot is usually a hybrid of bitter orange and lemon (C. limon), or bitter orange and lime (C. aurantiifolia). Even though oranges are often associated with increased energy levels, bergamot (Citrus Bergamia) can also help to calm and soothe. A study investigated the anxiolytic effects of bergamot essential oil and found that the oil helps to reduce stress responses.

Rose

The beautifully rich and floral scent of rose oil (Rosa) can also help to reduce feelings of anxiety and stress. Interestingly, a study highlighted how rose oil helped to calm pregnant women and reduce their anxiety during labour– one of the most intense and anxiety-inducing experiences in someone’s life.

Jasmine

Jasmines (Jasminum) are members of the olive family and are native to the warm, tropical regions of Asia and Oceania. Another distinctive floral scent, jasmine also helps to alleviate stress and promote a brighter mood. It was discovered that jasmine can affect mood states, and unlike some other sleep-promoting scents like lavender, jasmine is energising and refreshing.

Ylang ylang

If you’re looking for a scent other than lavender to help with relaxation, ylang ylang (Cananga Odorata) is a perfect choice. Ylang-ylang oil is extracted from freshly picked flowers by steam distillation or solvent extraction. The anxiolytic effects of ylang ylang were tested on patients in an intensive care unit, and it was found that it helped to reduce anxiety, increase sleep and stabilise blood pressure.

How to use botanicals for anxiety

If you want to try harnessing the power of botanicals to help tackle anxiety and stress, there are several ways you can do this. Breathing in the scent of essential oils is the easiest, most accessible and quick way to do this– either with a fragrant candle, diffuser, roll-on perfume or pure essential oil. The act of deep breathing itself and being present can also work hand-in-hand with the scent to help calm and ground you.
