Pine

Family: Pinaceae
Genus: Pinus
Species: P. sylvestris

Pine trees have been important since ancient times as a source of timber, wood pulp and renewable products (including pine oil and oleoresin gum).

Pine essential oil is usually obtained by steam distillation of the needles, twigs or wood, and is used in both aromatherapy and homeopathy. Distillation of oleoresin gum yields a volatile portion called the spirit of turpentine, and a non-volatile part called rosin.

Oleoresin gum is normally collected by mildly wounding the pine tree (called ‘tapping’), and collecting the resin that the tree exudes. Processed oleoresin is important in a large range of products, including paints, varnishes, adhesives, plasticizers, fragrances, biofuels and many more.

Today, pine oils are important in lots of products including household cleaners, soaps and fragrances.
