Fig

Family: Moraceae
Genus: Ficus
Species: F. carica

Figs are thought to be one of the very first plants cultivated by humans– there is even evidence that they were grown during the early Neolithic era.

Native to western Asia and regions surrounding the Mediterranean, figs were a staple fruit in ancient Greece and Rome and were cultivated throughout the growing region as far as the foothills of India.

Today figs are grown worldwide in regions possessing a sunny climate, but most fig production still centres around the Mediterranean region.

The fig fruit or syconia doesn’t travel well, so figs are often sold in a dried or processed form. They contain natural sugars and a wide range of beneficial nutrients, including numerous minerals and vitamins.

Fig oil can be obtained from the seed and leaves of fig trees. Cold-pressed fig seed oil is a good emollient which absorbs well into the skin, and it is also a popular fragrance used in candles and cosmetic products.

Figs have several health benefits. They are well known for promoting a healthy digestive system, and may also help to reduce the risk of heart disease and maintain blood sugar levels.
