Cedarwood

Family: Pinaceae and Cupressaceae
Genus: Cedrus and Juniperus Cupressus
Species: C. atlantica, C.deodara, J. virginiana, J ashei, J. procera, C.funebris

Cedarwood oil comes from two main families of plants: the Pinaceae and the Cupressaceae. The ‘true’ cedars (Cedrus genus), like the Atlas Cedar and the Himalayan Cedar, are large evergreen conifers, grown for both their timber and their oils. Today the Virginian cedar, the Mountain Cedar, the African Pencil Cedar and Chinese Weeping Cyprus are the principal sources of timber and essential oil production.

Normally extracted by steam distillation, Cedarwood oil has been used throughout history for fragrances, medicines, cosmetics, and aromatherapy.  It is also well known for its insect repellent properties.

Cedarwood has been used for hundreds of years in ancient medicine and aromatherapy. Studies have found Cedarwood oil to have several medicinal properties, including being antimicrobial, antioxidant, and assisting respiratory function and mood improvement.
