Magical, mystical, and evocative… a particular botanical scent has the power to instantly transport you to a faraway location or dream destination, without even having to leave the comfort of your home. That is one of the driving forces behind CRANBOURN®: harnessing the power of botanicals to create atmospheres in our own interior spaces.

In our Botanical Spotlight series, we will delve into the scientific, cultural and olfactory roots of the key botanicals from our fragrance collections.

Ylang ylang is a breathtaking tropical flower from the family Annonaceae, genus Cananga and species C. odorata. The yellow star-shaped flower is distinctive and beautiful, with many uses.

An iconic tropical beauty

The flowers grow on the Cananga tree, native to India, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Australia.

The name ylang-ylang comes from the Tagalog language of Austronesia, with translations including wilderness or flower of flowers. The essential oil has also gained the name Queen of Perfumes, as it is so extensively used within the fragrance industry.

Culturally, the flower has significance around the globe. In Indonesia, the flowers are spread on the bed of newlywed couples, and in the Philippines, they are strung into a necklace worn by women and used for adornment.

A staple in the world of fragrance

Ylang-ylang essential oil is extracted from the freshly picked flowers via steam distillation or solvent extraction. The oil is used in aromatherapy for various purposes, including high blood pressure and skin conditions.

In perfume, ylang ylang essential oil is most well-known for its use in Chanel No.5. The tropical, versatile fragrance blends and compliments other fruity, floral and even woody scents.

Primarily used as a heart note, you can find ylang ylang in our vibrant Sunset in Ibiza™ fragrance and our tropical Moments in Mauritius™ fragrance.
