Basil

Family: Lamiaceae
Genus: Ocimum
Species: O. basilicum, O. tenuiflorum, O. gratissimum

All basil species are members of the mint family Lamiaceae. Basil is native to tropical regions of Southeast Asia and Central Africa, and there are numerous important basil species. These include sweet basil, holy basil (or tulsi) and African basil.

Breeding has created many different basil cultivars, including well-known culinary basils like Genovese basil, Thai basil, and Mammoth basil.
Basil has been used for hundreds of years in ancient medicine and aromatherapy. Studies have discovered that basil oil has both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and it has been seen to aid mood improvement.
